Christmas Elf

Yesterday I was at work (at the Provo Library) minding my own business when my boss calls me. She tells me that the director of the Library would like me to be an elf in the Provo Christmas Parade on Saturday morning. Well what could I do? I mean this was my boss asking me on behalf of her boss to represent the library at the parade. So I did the only thing I could do. I said Yes and a few hours later I found my self at Taylor Maid renting a costume for said event. The city is paying for my costume rental and I am expecting major brownie points from my boss! If any of you want to see me make a fool of myself for the entire town of Provo...come watch the parade. It starts at 10 am on Saturday morning and goes from 5th West to 1st West and back along Center Street.

Flat Tire

I was headed up Provo Canyon last night to visit some friends in Heber. I was about halfway up the canyon when I got a flat tire!
It all turned out alright though! I just called to have some of my friends help me!
I am so thankful for cell phones though! Not even one person stopped to try to help me!!

A Week in Review (The Highlights at least!)

Monday- Worked 10 hours. Hung out with my roommates.
Tuesday- Worked 10 hours. Visited Jena at the Villa.
Wednesday- Worked 4 hours. Picked up my cousin Melanie from the airport. Car wouldn't start again. A nice airport employee jumped my car. I drove up to my aunt and uncle's house in Bountiful. My uncle fixed my car and my cousins were entertained by my "crazy" grandma (on my dad's side-not their grandma).
Thursday- Worked 10 hours. We had scary stories at the Provo City Library. After work I went to my ward/apt. complex skating party at Classic Skating. It was fun, but now I am sore from skating and falling!
Friday- Worked 8 hours. Played with Alan and Jenny!
Saturday- Worked 3 hours. Went shopping. Watched Pirates of Penzance with my roommate.

Whew!

Car. Won't. Start.

So yesterday morning I went out to my car to leave for work and my car wouldn't start! It had been acting a little funny earlier in the week-taking longer to turn over, but it did start each time. Yesterday it was just DEAD!
After silently panicking for a second, I decided that I would just have to ride the bus up to campus and then deal with my car later. Of course I didn't have change to ride the bus, just at $5 bill. So some girl that lives in my complex (I've never seen her before) offered to pay for me to ride up to campus. I am so greatful to her.
Halfway through my shift at BYU I realized that I didn't have my keys with me for Provo City. So I rode the bus back home after work and then walked to the Provo City Library. I had one of my co-workers bring me home at the end of the day.
All throughout the day I was freaking out because I didn't know what was wrong with my car and I didn't know how long it would take to get it fixed and on and on.
So I called Jay to come look at it. I also called my hometeacher to come give my car a jump. It turns out that my battery terminal was pretty corroded. So I went ahead and bought myself a new battery. I'm so thankful for those boys! They were life savers to me and I really appreciate all the time they spent helping me out.
It all worked out at the end of the day, but it was a pretty stressful day!

Inspiring

The other night at work I was looking through a journal with book reviews in it. This book caught my attention, so I decided to find out more about it. This is Akaine's website. She seems like such a pure and amazing person! Her art is simply stunning! She is so young, yet so wise. I want to learn more about her and have asked that we order this book for the library!

So I borrowed season 1 of the Cosby Show from Em the other day. I have been having a fun time re-living my childhood while watching the episodes. I remember watching The Cosby Show growing up and I still think it is as funny today as it was back then! I had never seen the pilot before, but so far the rest of them seem familiar! Yippee for TV shows on DVD.

Spell to look Magnificant

I'm not exactly sure if this book is being serious, or if they are making fun of witchcraft, but it is entertaining none the less!

So I got a 2nd job this week.

I applied for a part-time staff position for the Inter-Library Loan department at BYU.

I interviewed on Tuesday morning and found out this afternoon! I am really excited!

I will be supervising 3-4 student employee's. This is the office that I worked in as a student at BYU, but doing something a little bit different. I will be working with the document delivery part of the office. This basically means that when professors need library materials, my students will go pull the book and copy the articles and then take them to the professors offices. I will be doing the office work and make sure that everything will run smoothly.

I'm a little bit scared to actually be a supervisor of student employee's that will be in my same age range, but I am excited for this new opportunity!

We will be accepting Book Reviews until Friday at 8 PM. After that your book reviews will not be counted for this week's weekly drawing OR the GRAND PRIZE DRAWING.

Remember that the books have to be at least 100 pages and be on the teen or adult level. The books DO NOT have to be library books. You must fill out the book review forms (you can get additional forms at the library) completely and answer the questions in at least 2 sentences. Any book that you have read between June 6th and July 29th counts!

Sitting at the Bar

So I went to Applebee's today to get a gift card to give as a present. I asked the hostess where I could purchase said gift card and she told me to wait at the bar. She said that the bartender would be with me shortly.

I felt a little bit out of place just chillin' at the bar waiting for this gift card. I was the only one at the bar, but there were quite a few people in the restaurant. The bartender came up to me a few minutes later. After explaining what I needed, he asked me if he could get me a drink while I waited. I told him "no thank you" and he left.
I think that this is the first time that I have 1) ever sat at the bar and 2) been offered a drink. [Had I said Yes I would have been carded without a doubut though :) ]

I sort of laughed to myself about the situation I was in and waited for the bartended to come back with the gift card. After he came back I thanked him and left. I chuckled to myself about this incident all the way home!

Description

The other day I was at work and I answered the phone. A girl that was probably 12 or 13 asked if I could page someone. I told her that I couldn't page someone, but if she gave me the description of the person that I would try my best to find them. She went on to give me this description:
"Okay, my mom's name is Barbara. She has short reddish/brown hair. She's elderly (I suppose "elderly" to a 12 year old means that her mom is probably in her 40's). And she has 9 fingers. If you find her have her call Cora"

I tried not to laugh as I told her that I would go look for her mom. I know that it shouldn't be funny, but it was. There I was looking all over the library and trying to look at all these ladies fingers to see if they were missing any!!

I didn't find Barbara, but if you see a nine-fingered lady wandering around Provo...ask her to please call home! :)

I was going to try to re-read all of the books before the 6th one came out, but I'm not going to make it. I did re-read books 1 and 2 though!

BUSTED!

Recently we have had an influx of pre-teen boys playing games on the computers at the library. This would be fine...if they followed the rules! They have found a way to bypass the system, so they don't have to log on with their library cards or keep to their 1 1/2 hour time limit.

We have talked to each of these boys NUMEROUS times and they are pretty rude and get even more rude every day. I feel bad for them that their parents just drop them at the library, but seriously, they have got to stop!

Tonight I got this e-mail from one of my co-workers regarding one of these boys. It's pretty funny!

"The Asian preteen boy who wears glasses who hangs out on the computers upstairs has been caught once again abusing computer time. Since it was his 3rd offense he has been restricted from computers for one month (till August 7th). He has been told that he is not allowed around the computer area or join anyone else on the computer. And in parting I shall share some kind words he shared with me that I had to keep myself from laughing at when he spoke. "You're a mean one Mr. Grinch" and "You have made a powerful enemy." "

Cafe Rio

I LOVE Cafe Rio! I went tonight with Ash and Tim since they are moving to Indiana tomorrow. We wanted to go together one last time before they leave town. As I was paying for my meal, I was randomly selected by the cash register to participate in an automated survey. After I call about this survey I will get a FREE dessert or juice next time I go in.

I love that place!!!

Talents

Tonight I went to see the booths on University Avenue that are in conjunction with the Freedom Festival. The Festival is going on all weekend and there are lots of groups that have set up booths across from the Provo Tabernacle. There are rides for the kids and lots of food. Businesses and local entertainment. But what I liked best were seeing all of the crafts and such that were displayed. It was fun to see cool jewelry, paintings, and photographs. I am amazed at the talents of those around me. I can't even begin to pretend that I could ever make any of that stuff! But it is simply awe-inspiring to me that beautiful things are made by everyday people. And even though I don't have the talent of an artist or a photographer, I think that one of my talents is to appreciate their hard work and the beauty that they portray.

Rodeo

So I went to the Strawberry Days rodeo in Pleasant Grove last night! It was so much fun!! I just love the different rodeo events and just people watching the rodeo crowd! The mutton bustin (where little kids ride sheep and see how long they can stay on) was so cute! It's fun to see the buckin' broncos, the barrel racing, the wild cow milking and of course the bullriding. I think little kids dressed up in cowboy gear is so cute!

I guess now is as good of a time as any to admit the fact that I like the country lifestyle. Don't get me wrong, I have never wanted to be a farmers wife and still don't, but I like country. When I am all alone, I predominately listen to country music. I think that cowboys are hot! I would be alright if a future man in my life had his day job, but wanted to be a cowboy on the weekend. I admire the hard work that farmers and ranchers do.

Basically I had a fun time last night and hope to go to some more rodeos this summer. If anyone else wants to go with me, they are more than welcome!

Funny how life is...

There have been moments in my life where I wanted to be in a relationship. I wanted to be dating someone. I thought that my life would be so incredibly happy and uncomplicated, if this would just happen.

But then when the opportunity has presented itself, I am just not so interested anymore. There is a guy in my new ward who has asked me out MULTIPLE times. I went out with him a few weeks ago and had a good time, but wasn't really all that interested in going out with him again. He was very persistant and just kept asking me out. Finally the other night he called again and asked me out. After telling him that I had plans for the upteenth time... he asked if he "should keep trying or just give up at this point". I had to tell him that I just wasn't interested in him like that.

I have never had to deal with this situation before and didn't quite know what to do. I wanted to be as kind as possible to him, but not lead him on. This is difficult!! I just hope that it won't be too awkward at church now.

I find it ironic that when I wanted to have a relationship I didn't ever have one. And now that I don't want one, I could have one.

I could have had him, I just didn't want him.

I'm a hiker

On Monday I went hiking in Arches National Park. It was SO much fun! I went with 3 of my co-workers. We hiked around all day and had a fun picnic lunch in the park. We saw: Delicate Arch, Landscape Arch, Double Arch, The North and South Windows, Balanced Rock, Pineview Arch, Sand Dune Arch, The Devil's Garden, The Firey Furnace, Skyline Arch, Broken Arch, and Tunnel Arch.

It was so nice to enjoy nature and just have a day outside of Provo! I want to go back to Arches again someday!!

I love my job!

I really love my job!!

Today I worked on a project from 9-1 and it was so fun! I am doing the Teen Bulletin Board for the month of June. I am centering it around the Summer Reading Theme which involves pirates. So I am putting up YA books about pirates and pirate "terms to know"! I am also advertising for the improv group that will be performing in the middle of June. I spent all morning printing up cool graphics and gluing them onto fun colored paper! You will all have to come admire my handywork! I plan on putting the bulletin board up early next week!

Now all I have to do is "antique" the edges of an old map I printed off the internet. I just hope that I don't burn down my apt. in the process! :)

P.S. We have an Adult Summer Reading Program at the library. This year is going to be lots of fun! So if any of you want to join in the fun, we start signing up for the program on June 6th. If you read at least 3 books over the summer and write a short review on them you can be entered into a drawing for the grand prize of a COMPUTER! We will also be having weekly drawings for gift certificates and free stuff!

When I re-read my journal most of the time I laugh at myself and the rest of the time, I think "man, I'm retarded!!" Anyway... Here are some excerpts from my journal! "I can't believe that the semester is almost over! I am going to be sad to say goodbye to all of my friends. At times, I just want life to stay the way it is now and not change. Other times I can't wait for something different... I am looking forward to not having to do homework for 4 months! But I don't really have much going for me when I get home. My parents want me to work in a hot dog making factory, btu I think that's just gross!!"

"I was telling mom today about our Christmas Tree at school. Our FHE brother Shane cut it down for us at the sanddunes. It was a juniper and not too beautiful! It only had 2 sides and we had to cut off the main branch to get it into the stand. So we duct taped the branches back on to have so sort of fullness to the tree! We decorated it with strips of material and raffia. It looked pretty good...when the room was dark and only the christmas tree lights were on!! Oh the joys of being poor!!

New Toy!

So I have been wanting a computer for a while now. I had been dreaming about having my own little Lappy and typing all the live long day...

So last Tuesday I did it! I ordered a laptop from Dell! And last night I came home from work to find a beautiful surprise waiting on my bed! My new laptop!!!

I spent all day getting my new friend settled in my room and now I am loving having my own computer!

I love technology!!!

School Mistakes Huge Burrito for Weapon

So I found this article on the Internet. Actually it was on Dave Barry's blog, that Nama has a link to. Em and Ritz and I got quite a kick out of it! Enjoy!!!

CLOVIS, N.M. - A call about a possible weapon at a middle school prompted police to put armed officers on rooftops, close nearby streets and lock down the school. All over a giant burrito.
Someone called authorities Thursday after seeing a boy carrying something long and wrapped into Marshall Junior High.
The drama ended two hours later when the suspicious item was identified as a 30-inch burrito filled with steak, guacamole, lettuce, salsa and jalapenos and wrapped inside tin foil and a white T-shirt.
"I didn't know whether to laugh or cry," school Principal Diana Russell said.
State police, Clovis police and the Curry County Sheriff's Department arrived at the school shortly after 8:30 a.m. They searched the premises and determined there was no immediate danger.
In the meantime, more than 30 parents, alerted by a radio report, descended on the school. Visibly shaken, they gathered around in a semi-circle, straining their necks, awaiting news.
"There needs to be security before the kids walk through the door," said Heather Black, whose son attends the school.
After the lockdown was lifted but before the burrito was identified as the culprit, parents pulled 75 students out of school, Russell said.
Russell said the mystery was solved after she brought everyone in the school together in the auditorium to explain what was going on.
"The kid was sitting there as I'm describing this (report of a student with a suspicious package) and he's thinking, 'Oh, my gosh, they're talking about my burrito.'"
Afterward, eighth-grader Michael Morrissey approached her.
"He said, 'I think I'm the person they saw,'" Russell said.
The burrito was part of Morrissey's extra-credit assignment to create commercial advertising for a product.
"We had to make up a product and it could have been anything. I made up a restaurant that specialized in oddly large burritos," Morrissey said.
After students heard the description of what police were looking for, he and his friends began to make the connection. He then took the burrito to the office.
"The police saw it and everyone just started laughing. It was a laughter of relief," Morrissey said.
"Oh, and I have a new nickname now. It's Burrito Boy."

Food Poisioning!!!

So I went to a family dinner on Sunday night with Ash and Tim. We had hamburgers for dinner. And although the hamburgers were quite pink on the inside, I ate the whole thing. Ash and Tim and I joked about how we hoped we wouldn't get food poisioning, but didn't think much more about it.
I went to the Villa on Sunday night to have a sleep over with Ritz, Em, and Nama. After Em and I finished talking around 12:30 my body decided that it was awake again. So for the next 3 hours I just sort of laid in bed thinking about random things and wishing that I could fall asleep!! Around 3 a.m. I started getting sick! I did not feel well at all!! This lasted the rest of the night with me getting up every few hours. I didn't get much sleep and I didn't feel well!
Yesterday I tried to finish packing up my apartment so that I could move, but didn't have the energy to do much of anything. One of the girls that is moving into my old apartment was nice to put some of my stuff in the living room and check on me periodically!
After Buck and Alan came over and gave me a blessing I felt better. Then I called Em to bring some people over to load up my car.
Ritz is AMAZING at packing!! It only took 2 loads for me to move all of my crap! Yipee!! If I would have done it on my own, I know that I would have had to take more than that!
This morning I woke up feeling 100 times better! I checked into my new place and had Nama help me unload the car!!

I am SO thankful for wonderful friends who helped me when I couldn't help myself!

Vacation Fun

I went home for 5 days recently because my brother Eric just left on his mission to Brazil. While spending time with my family I had a good time, had some laughs, and was ready to come back to Provo by the end of the trip!

Here are some highlights from my trip!

*Since my dad didn't want to get stuck in Kansas City traffic after picking me up from the airport we took an alternate route. This led us to drive around in a complete circle that lasted an hour!! We did finally get home though!

*I went on a walking tour of my parents "acreage". My parents bought a farm with 40 acres last August. When I went home for Christmas I didn't walk around the property too much because I was only home for 3 days and basically it was just too cold for me to want to! Anyway, my sister Jenna gave me a tour of the farm, complete with their 2 firepits, a campsite, the horse barn and a wooden swing! It was fun to see my family's new stomping grounds.

*Since my brother was leaving, we had an open house of sorts for him on Sunday night. It was weird for me to hang out with the adults instead of the youth! I mean these were my leaders growing up, but now apparently I am an adult just like them. Weird!!

*After the party we were cleaning up and taking apart a wooden picnic table. My dad couldn't get one of the pieces apart without using a rubber mallet. But the mallet was out in the shop so the table was left "as-is" for the night. The next day I was talking to my mom and saw that the mallet was in the house. I asked her if anyone had tried to take the table apart yet. She said that she and my brother Scott (he's 14) had tried, but couldn't do it. I then turned the pieces upside down (so gravity could do some of the work!) and hit it twice before the pieces came apart. What my mom said next was classic! She looked at me (being completely serious) and said: "You go girl!" I laughed so hard!! I told my family what she had said when we were eating dinner and my siblings thought it was hilarious!!

*While Eric was packing his suitcases (the night before he left!) my 12 year old brother Brian was teasing my sister Jenna (she's 9). They were arguing about something when Jenna started crying and went to my mom saying that "Brian called me a hypocrite!" Then she stopped crying and said "What's a hypocrite?" I laughed that she was so upset and could instantly turn it off because she didn't know what it was that he was calling her!!

*Eric and two of his friends have a band called "Good Report". One of the guys plays the guitar, the other plays the drums and my brother sings. I heard quite a few of their songs because my brother was mixing their CD. He even burned me a copy. They are actually pretty good and their lyrics are funny! One of their songs is entitled "Girls are a waste of Time". This song goes on to say that girls are not only a waste of time, but also a waste of money, and they mess with guy's minds! I thought that was pretty funny! This same song also says something to the effect that love is a waste and you shouldn't try it! Pretty funny stuff!

Well I hope that you enjoyed these reminiscences from the great state of Missouri! Anytime you want to visit my parents-just bring a tent and a sleeping bag, they have a great campsite right on their property! :)

National Humor Month

April is National Humor Month.

I know this because I put up a display Friday at the library honoring this very event! It was a really fun display to put together because I got to pull alot of really interesting books. I put up books that were written by Erma Bombeck, Dave Barry, and Bill Cosby. I put up comic books and books making fun of Martha Stewart!

While compiling this display I ran accross this book: "Wearing of This Garment Does Not Enable You to Fly: 101 Real Dumb Warning Labels" This book is awesome!! I am amazed at what is printed on warning labels, and even more amazed that there had to be a reason for that warning to prompt the label being printed.

Sometimes

Sometimes I read an e-mail from an old friend or talk with them on the phone and smile at how their life has changed since we last spoke. Then I wonder if my life has changed that much. I graduated almost a year ago and don't feel much more settled or secure than I did last April. I don't know if I am simply waiting for something to happen, or if I am too scared to take a step into the darkness and take some risks.

I wonder how I will ever know what I am to do, if I am too stubborn to take a chance. I just have a hard time putting it all on the line, if I don't know what the outcome will be. I like playing it safe. I like having two feet on the ground. But maybe it would be good for me to branch out and just take a leap of faith. I just don't know which direction to go... If I knew maybe I wouldn't be so frightened of what's out there.

I don't really know what I'm trying to say, but these are just thoughts that I have had lately. I love my job, but that's pretty much the only thing keeping me in Provo. Is that enough? Should I be somewhere else?? If you know the answers... Please let me know!!

Smile!

On Tuesday night a man came up to the desk and saw my co-worker and I chatting. He made some small talk with us and then asked for the item that he was looking for.

As he left he said this, "Smile! You know why we should smile? Because we know who we are! We are children of God! We are potential Gods and Goddesses! We KNOW who we are!"

I don't know who that man is or if I will ever see him again, but his words caused me to think! I am so grateful for the knowledge that I know who I am! I am so thankful for the Atonement, especially at this Easter Season!

His comment not only brought a smile to my lips, but a feeling of gratitude to my heart!

Disrespect

A gentleman was using his cell phone up on the 2nd floor this morning. I politely asked him to take it downstairs since we do not allow cell phones up on the second floor. This floor is our quiet floor and we try to keep it as quiet as possible. He looked at me and nodded. Then as soon as I went back to my desk, instead of going downstairs like I had asked, he simply shut the copy room door. It makes me frustrated that grown adults refuse to comply with simple rules. I did not ask him to hang up the phone or even leave the library. I just asked him to go down stairs. When he finished with his call I reminded him again that cell phones were not allowed up here. He didn't seem to care, and left the floor.

Why are people so stubborn and disrespectful? I know that because of my size I probably do not demand the respect that I think I deserve. However I am the one that is employed by the library and I am the one that has to enforce it's rules. I just wish that people didn't make life harder for themselves, by refusing to do relatively easy things!

And then there were Six...

So my roommate Emily R. got engaged this weekend. I came home from Stake Conference to see this MASSIVE bouquet of flowers on the table. There was no doubt about it. She was/or already had gotten engaged!

I knew from just seeing the flowers that a ring was on her finger. I had seen all of the signs before and once again I was right!

Emily makes the SIXTH roommate of mine to get engaged while I was living with them! Six! Many others have gotten married since I have lived with them and a few of them now have children.

I am so happy for Emily and all of the others that have found their eternal companions. I have learned a lot from living with engaged girls and am glad that I am now at the point in my life that I can truly feel excited and no longer jealous.

I wish Emily the best of luck!

(P.S. When talking to my mom on the phone yesterday, she suggested that I post this sign when I move into my new apartment.)

Crazy People

There were some really crazy people at work today.
One woman wanted to know the burial place of some actress that was once married to a millionaire. I am not sure why that is so critical to her life, but it was very important to her! She then proceeded to print about a million things while our printer was being stupid and then asked me to keep track of her printouts so that she could write a check when she was finished. After printing each job she would, even so "kindly" ask me if I had written it down. Like I was the idiot that couldn't keep track of what was being printed!
Another gentleman came up to the desk twice to ask if he hadn't made any printouts. How was I supposed to know if he didn't print, if there was no evidence either way. I couldn't exactly ask him what he didn't print!
And the craziest of all... a guy was sitting in one of the chairs by the big stained glass window. He was talking to himself and making motions with his hands. Then he got up, looked at his chair and started chuckling to himself. He then asked me to log him onto the computers and told me that if something didn't work I would need to log him onto another computer. "Just to be sure that I can do what I want to do".
Some days these crazy people really try my patience. And today was one of those days!

Rituals

When Caroline and I shared a room we had this "ritualistic" conversation almost every night before we went to bed. After getting ready for bed, we would slip under the covers and have a conversation that went like this...

Caroline: "Ahhh, bed!"
Ann-Marie: "This is the best part of the day!"

We would giggle, say good night and go to sleep.

I don't remember when we first started doing this, but we would have this conversation at least once a week for quite a few months.

I miss those days. And sometimes I still repeat that converstation to myself before going to sleep. In fact I did just the other night. (Lucky for me, my room-roommate was not in the room at the time. She might think that I'm crazy, if I start talking to myself!)

Before Leah left Provo (well and when she was still here...) she kept asking me to write a blog. So here I am. I have joined the masses!

It took me a while to figure out how to do this whole blog thing. And with A LOT of help from Em (she found my typo!) I am now a part of the blogging community!

I hope that I have something interesting to say every now and then!
