i have the same question regarding the button you push to cross the street...why do people push it over and over? it's not going to make the light turn green any faster!
As far as the elevator goes, I think the answer is simple. Buttons are fun to push! Gives me a little thrill. Or maybe other people come along and do it because they feel ripped off that the first person did it and they don't get a chance to.
I must admit, I have occassionally been guilty of this. Usually I do it on the cross walk because I think I pressed it too soon after the light turned green and so the light won't take me seriously. Sometimes if I wait and then press it again, the light will soon turn yellow. But maybe it was going to anyway. I do not control such things. But I like to pretend I do.
Wow, I've analyzed your question way too deeply. You did call it "Pondering", though.

Maybe they're afraid that the button forgot that it was pushed.
And sometimes it turns off the request.
